How to choose an electrician

Selecting a qualified electrical contractor for your home or business can be challenging.

Most electrical contractors are specialists to one degree or another, so it helps to identify your particular need before you start calling. Is your need for new construction or major renovation? Are you looking for service or repair of existing electrical items? Is the work needed for your home, a small business, or a major facility? Does this need represent an emergency, or are you concerned about a dangerous condition that exists? Does your work include specialized systems, such as fire alarm, security, sound, video, communications, wired or wireless networks? Answering a few of these questions, at least in your own mind, will help you first to select a qualified contractor, and then to describe your electrical needs to the person that you call.

Once you have defined your specific need, your goals are to find a contractor that is

Technically proficient,
Reputable and financially stable, and
Has a thorough understanding of your business.
Finding a good fit

Finally, inquire about the contractor’s warranty and insurance, and get it in writing. Does the contractor guarantee that the work will be installed to meet code? Will the contractor correct work that does not meet applicable standards? Insist on a written estimate and a copy of the contractor’s insurance certificate

Things to consider before you remodel your kitchen

1. Define your scope of work. Are you updating an existing kitchen, or do you want to completely redesign the layout of your kitchen to suit current and future needs. Keep in mind if you want to move walls around that you will need to consult a contractor or architect to confirm that it is an option. This is your kitchen, you need to make sure you are going to be happy with all the fixtures, lighting , appliances, cabinetry and flooring that you choose.

Listen to the recommendations of others who have had a successful contractor that has provided them with all the anemities that they requested.

2. Setting a Budget. One of the biggest things you can do in the beginning is to have an accurate budget. Kitchen remodeling projects are notorious for estimates giving homeowners sticker shock with the preliminary design. This tends to happen more if your kitchen designer is utilizing your wish list for the first draft instead of your budget.

3. Establish a Time-line. You need to allow plenty of time for your kitchen remodeling project, and take into consideration any possible events that could interfere with your project. During this process your contractor should give you a time line of how long the project should take based upon your selections.

So whether you are re-designing your kitchen and adding additional fixtures or you are completely remodeling, remember that consulting with your contractor and the electrician who will be performing the work is key to a sucessful and timely project.

Century goes Wacky for Softball

Century Electric went a bit WACKY this weekend, by that I mean we played in the annual WACKY TOURNAMENT at Delta Park. It was fun-filled and action packed as each inning you were required to do something different, 1st inning we batted with a wooden bat and got 4 outs, 2nd inning we hit a 16″ mush ball, 3rd inning and probably the team favorite was Dodge ball, 4th inning you ran in reverse and well that still threw us off even with someone standing there and calling us to 3rd base, 5th inning you got one pitch only and finally the 6th was normal play. It was a great day to play and brought plenty of laughs and although we didnt bring home a trophy this time we have some great memories.

Congratulations to Century Electric on their first co-ed softball tournament played at Prairie Fields. Century Electric rallied for 8 games to take 3rd place out of 12 teams. What a great group of people to play with and looking forward to the next tournament coming up at Delta Park on July 24th, would love to see all of you out there!

Restaurant Ambiance – Thirsty Lion Pub & Grill

Most recently we have been doing work on the Thirsty Lion Pub & Grill at Washington Square, when we were contacted to do the job they wanted a inviting and appealing atmosphere for the customer along with strategic placement for the big screen T.V’s that encompasses the dining area. We created a lighting system that is easy on the eyes, utilizing wall sconces and pendant lighting to create an air of ambiance. Check out the Thirsty Lion Pub & Grill they have a great venue!

Smoke Detectors

New smoke detector laws are now in effect as of 4-1-2011. Any new construction is required to have smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors in buildings with gas appliances. These new detectors are available now and don’t just beep any more, when you push the test button they actually say FIRE, FIRE, FIRE, or Carbon Monoxide, Carbon Monoxide, Carbon Monoxide.
